President-elect Donald Trump publicly expressed his support for the H-1B work visa in a phone interview with the New York Post on December 28, 2024.
His endorsement of the H-1B work visa echoes the strong support for the program voiced by Elon Musk, the world’s richest man!
Trump stated: “I’ve always liked these visas. I have always been in favor of them. That’s why we have them. Many people on H-1B work visas are working in my businesses. I believe in the H-1B visa program. I’ve used it many times. It’s a great visa program.”
This comes as excellent news for foreign students in the U.S. Why? Because during his first presidential term, Trump was actually quite critical of this visa category and rolled out policies that restricted foreign workers from applying for work visas in the U.S.
Trump’s shift in stance on the H-1B work visa is likely owed in large part to one key figure: Elon Musk, the world’s richest man.
Astute readers may have noticed that the majority of members on Elon Musk’s core technical teams are ethnic Asian technicians. Hardworking, diligent, dedicated, and compliant with instructions while rarely causing trouble, these Asian workers have undoubtedly left a highly favorable impression on Elon Musk.
Elon Musk’s unwavering support for the H-1B work visa has also garnered backing from several other high-tech companies.
Musk said that the reason he has so many key technical personnel building SpaceX, Tesla, and other companies that drive America’s strength right here in the U.S. is precisely because of the H-1B work visa program.
However, the support for the H-1B work visa from both Trump and Elon Musk has sparked significant dissatisfaction among the MAGA conservative hardliners in Trump’s camp. They want Trump to uphold his prior promises to them of restricting immigration, and have launched several attacks against Elon Musk. Undeterred, Musk fired back at these attacks, even resorting to profanity, telling them to “F-K YOURSELF”!
Musk vowed to “go to war” with these conservative hardliners in Trump’s camp over the issue of the H-1B work visa. Musk stated: “Take a big step back and F–K YOURSELF in the face. I will go to war on this issue the likes of which you cannot possibly comprehend.” Readers may interpret this statement for themselves.
Musk and high-tech companies emphasize that the H-1B work visa program is crucial for ensuring U.S. companies can recruit and retain highly skilled talent that is in short supply among the domestic U.S. workforce, and that the U.S. government must expand the H-1B program.
Elon Musk said that his firm support for the H-1B work visa stems from his desire for the U.S. to attract the top 0.01% of engineering talent globally—talent that forms the foundation of America’s continued success in global competition.
Clearly, Elon Musk’s vision and foresight have influenced and persuaded President-elect Trump. The very next day after Musk’s war of words with the conservative hardliners in Trump’s camp, Trump publicly announced his stance, aligning himself with Musk.
In reality, the biggest current issue plaguing the H-1B work visa is quota limitations. The key to resolving the H-1B quota issue lies with the U.S. Congress. With the strong backing of Trump and Elon Musk, coupled with Republican control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, we are optimistic about the prospects of expanding or increasing H-1B visa quotas. We also hope that the newly appointed Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will issue fair and progressive policies for the adjudication of H-1B work visa applications.
The annual H-1B visa lottery application period is just around the corner. Foreign students in the U.S. who have already secured employment should focus on excelling at their jobs and persuading their employers to sponsor them for the H-1B visa lottery. For those who have not yet found a job, we recommend securing a role that matches their professional qualifications as soon as possible, and convincing their employers to sponsor their H-1B visa lottery application.
